This is the final installment from Matt Rietz over at Viewfrommyseats.  Sorry this took so long but I was going through some job hunting issues and needed a break.  I hope you enjoy Matt’s take on Social Media and the NHL and you learned a lot about what the NHL is doing correctly.

People that are active in the online hockey community know where the most up-to-the-second information is available: Twitter. Big websites are dependent on their writers and the bloggers may hear about the information quickly—but it still takes time to put together even a 2 paragraph article. Even when it’s done, it’s not like everyone in the world will see it. But Twitter, that’s a different story. How long does it take for someone with a breaking story to knock out 140 characters? But that’s only the first part of the story…

The true power of Twitter is the speed at which information can spread from a single Tweet to across a community. If someone tweets that Jay Bouwmeester signed a contract with the Calgary Flames a day before free agency opens, they’re reaching all of their followers with the press of a button. But when I hear that news, I’ll be quick to re-tweet the information to all of my followers. Some of them, will in-turn share with all of their readers. When a story goes viral—THAT’S the power of Twitter.

From a news point of view, blogging and Twitter go hand and hand. But that’s only a single area that social media helps the NHL. Another area that is just as important is how Social Media can promote the sense of community between fans—whether the fans are in different cities, different states or even different countries. Bloggers and fans alike are increasingly using places like Facebook to strengthen friendships with people that they’ve interacted with in other venues. Maybe the met at a team function. Maybe they met at an NHL TweetUp. Whatever the case may be, Facebook and the like give them a place to keep in contact and share their ideas.

Specifically for hockey fans, it gives them a place to talk to other hockey fans about the sport they love. They can share articles they’ve read. They can share videos that they saw on YouTube (or NHL.com). They can vote on polls they saw on Twitter or even share Fan Pages to their favorite hockey blogs. Whatever the reason for communication, it provides a venue that hockey fans can interact with one another as much as they’d like. It’s like an electronic self-help group for puck crazed addicts (minus the 12 steps).

The NHL and individual teams have jumped head first into the New Media arena as well. During the playoffs, the Blackhawks and Penguins were serving up contests via Twitter for fans to win prizes—up to and including game tickets. Teams like the Los Angeles Kings will have contests on both Twitter and Facebook for their fans to win prizes as well. They’ve learned that they have a huge opportunity through the social media channels—they can either take advantage of the channels or watch another team do it for them.

Twitter and Facebook also serve as the newest way for bloggers to promote their articles. The high-end hockey blogs are rapidly becoming the backbone of hockey media for information for a huge percentage of the fan base. Unfortunately, bloggers often times can get lost in the huge sea of the World Wide Web. They need to get the word out—and they need to get the word out to the right people. Again: Enter Social Media.

Follow the right people on Twitter and you’ll have a never ending stream of quality information at your fingertips. Some might be from sources that have been around for decades, some might be up-and-comers that have always been good but have never had the chance. The genius of social media is that YOU get to decide who YOU want to give your attention to. If you find someone that you really enjoy, you can further engage the conversation on their blog or a Facebook page. It’s a two-way conversation—and it’s up to YOU how involved you want to be. You don’t have to, but at least now the choice is yours.

At the end of the day, I have to give a ton of credit to the NHL for being so accepting of the new media world. The old way of thinking was that online content was GIVING the product away for free. The NHL has realized that this isn’t giving hockey away for free—it’s PROMOTING it for free. The league could either acknowledge or shun it. They’ve acknowledged it and embraced it with open arms! They’ve certainly been through some rough times (and they’re still dealing with the hard times), but this is the way that they’ll save their league.

For the first time in a while, I can say this: The NHL is doing something right! Thank God, there’s hope for them yet.

Tweetea brings together a diverse group of people with interests to discuss social media. Media relations was discussed and how to better serve everyone involved.   How do we communicate with the Media and to get our messages across to them with out spam, awkward email or just being annoying and unproductive from a Public Relations perspective.  Tweetea happens every Tuesday, from 7:30 – 10 p.m. at Goldfish Tea in Royal Oak off on Fourth Street.

Twitter is a great tool to state what you are looking for but when your profile is limited to 140 characters you can only say so much.

What is the best solution to help reporters get the information they need and public relations professionals to pass on their information to someone who will promote it?

There was some talk of innovation and things we could do. Help a Reporter Out (HARO)is a great service but what if you are looking for a local flare?

What if you decided to Facebook friend a reporter? Simple.  You can find out what you have in common, what stories they need, and they can use it as a distribution channel of ideas?

Just a thought. When you do so, if the reporters collectively decide to change their status and you are looking at them then it is more up to the minute than Linked In. You could solve their problem, learn more about them and well just be nice to each other?

I realize this isn’t out of the box thinking. But, if public relations and journalists realized we are all in this together and there is an easier way to find out what about each other and create relationships instead of fighting them.

Wouldn’t the communications industry get along better? You could solve some of the problems just by talking and people would know what you were writing, when your deadline was, and everything.

Terry Foster from the Detroit News often uses his Facebook to get feedback on some of his columns. He is a sports columnist but I am sure this could be used for different purposes.

In time I am sure there will be some totally awesome platform some start up will invent to make this a better process.  In the meantime, build relationships with Facebook and Twitter.  If used properly, I think the spam emails will be cut in half.

Then take this offline by having Tweetups so we can find out what each other wants and needs? I realize everything is deadline driven but in business relationships run smoothly if you do business with people who you know, like and trust.

I am a young professional… Well young into my career anyway, I took the LONG road through my college career and currently I am working 2 jobs trying to find my ENTRY LEVEL position in either Public Relations for a Tech related company or Interactive/Marketing Coordinator.

There was a time in my life not so long ago, when I would have LOVED to have moved out of the D.   I am a born and bread Detroiter! I will LEAVE if the opportunity arises and I am networking IN and OUT of the state.

I have been networking a lot on Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In.  I have made connections through #BlogChat which might help me if I do get a chance to demonstrate my abilities to the Red Cross in Washington, DC.

But why would anyone want to stay in MI? Why wouldn’t you want to leave?  As one of my friends stated, if I was going to make my break away it would have to be RIGHT now.  I would never make it, moving away from my Red Wings at the start of the preseason.  To most people preseason, does not matter but to me… Well I have a hockey problem.

I have started networking… I do it every week.  #tweetea has been a staple and something I plan on.  I was invited to a Menu Tasting at Olga’s Kitchen today by another group of people,  who started Eat Ups.  Which I was totally impressed with.  Everyone should eat food with Joe Foodie! He knows his stuff!

I have never been to Olga’s and it is a MI staple which has been around as long as I have been alive.  I met one of the people, who were in charge of the event, he is a coach for Team in Training which helps benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Through Twitter I made the connection during my early days of campaigning for LLS.  Small World.

The food was fantastic.  The service was great and we were treated like Rock Stars!  I would definitely go back!

Why Detroit is home.

My family is small.  I am an ONLY child, my Dad, Godmother, and aunt are here.  I would like to be closer to my cousins and hopefully the social networks will allow this to happen.

I have rediscovered some old friendships, made new ones, and well I am not sure if I can handle moving.  I am fine with doing things on my own but moving cross country or elsewhere.  I don’t know.

I don’t want to be part of the brain drain.  I would feel guilty with all the relationships I have worked hard to create, build and maintain.  I am not sure if they feel the same way.  But I like this networking thing!

I have broken out of my shell and actually am organizing something which I never thought I could do.  I am planning a #journchat LIVE meeting, Aug 17 from  7:30-10  p.m.  Plus, I am writing membership profiles for PRSA Technology section. I am doing things I never thought I would have the leadership for.  In the past, I would just let things go and never contribute.  Now I am working on leadership skills.

I don’t want to leave the D.  Can you help me stay here? I do not want to be part of the brain drain.

On Saturday I presented this to about 150 people at St. Anastasia in Troy for a Re – Employment seminar put on by Matthew Karrandja.  His goal was to give financial planning,  social media training, and some resume advice to the community.  He is planning on having a faith based network.

He also has a website which he is hoping to promote.  I am going to be a part of his content team.  We are looking to keep the good talent in MI and not move.   Everyone has heard of the brain drain and a lot of professionals are moving out of MI.

We need good news and this is going to be a platform to help people in transition.  I met Matt through a Linked In connection, then we went to lunch for a meeting and I thought I couldn’t help him since Trialon is automotive employment and here I am a social networking person.  Turns out this was actually a great fit! He has been a great asset and full of great advice.

I am a student of Kevin Donlin and I met David Perry his partner through Linked In.  This is where I have practiced the lessons in which I am sharing and if you need ideas I suggest you follow them on Twitter, add them on Facebook and Linked IN.  They are really smart people.  What is on this presentation is only a touch of what they teach.  I combine it with the power of  your online presence.

Let’s get everyone working together and make a difference in MI!

Check out this video: Hes Just Not That Into You trailer

He’s just Not That into You… is a story of a group of women that are struggling with dating and long term relationships. One of them doesn’t want to end up being single for the rest of her life, the other one is in a long term relationship that is NOT ending up in marriage, and there are a list of struggles that each of these women go through. I have not seen this movie yet but this post isn’t about what is going on in the movie or the plot per say. It is mostly about what Drew Barrymore’s character says at the end of this preview.

I guess the point is that Social Media has taken over everything and it isn’t just about Twitter. I met the guy that I went out with 2x through Linked In initially as a business contact because he was in Public Relations and I wanted to start in public relations. That then transferred to Twitter somehow, and then I found him on Facebook and he added me there. So what turned out to be a business contact wound up being something more by email on Facebook and then real email.

So basically you need to check your Twitter, then Facebook, I found him on Myspace but haven’t added him yet. It is crazy. I have only really talked to him on the phone once. It is a mix of Twitter, email to plan a date, and then text messages in between.

My question is what happened to a phone call? I have only had one? I know it is the sign of the times and I probably should ask him but at the same time.. look at all these mediums there is to avoid communication and talk about confusing because what if you miss one? Is that going to mean its over?

Drew Barrymore’s character has a valid point. There are so many portals of communication that you may get rejected by at least seven by the end of the night. That is my point.

You need all these forms to brand yourself. To make yourself someone that gets the position with the company of your dreams. When you are trying to date it gets confusing and time consuming. So rethink about the OLD fashioned phone call… You can probably learn more about someone that way.

He Myspaced her, then after a few days or what not. He called her from work, she called him at work, he emailed her blackberry, she text his cell, and you have to check all these different portals to get rejected by seven different technologies. I love this saying because if it was not so honest than it would not be true.

Turns out that it ended after 2 dates and over a text message. We were in the same room and he couldn’t come up to me to say what was needed to be said.

    1. I am a linking junkie. I have been banned from Facebook 2.5 times for doing it. I love to share stories, news articles, and anything and everything that comes through my email box.

    2. I am an ONLY child and my Mom passed away July 3, 2007. Ironically, that is the ONE year anniversary of Steve Yzerman announcing his retirement.

    3. I used to play hockey from 2003-2005. I stopped because I had retina detachment surgery. When I went back I realized how out of shape I was and that I had to STOP. I still have all my gear.

    4. I can’t see with out my glasses and I won’t do contacts anymore.
    My right eye is so bad from the retina detachment surgery that I can’t really function with out them. I have a buckle in my right eye to keep the retina in place. This happened when I was 28.

    5. I used to sing Karaoke all the time. Now I find the bar scene the same old, and it isn’t helping my career. I feel that I am too old for it. Though I quit singing mostly because of my TMJ problem that I got over the summer from a 26” television falling on my head at work.

    6. It took me 10 years to be set free from the EMU prison. I finally wound up with my B.S. degree in Communications Technology in August 2008. I have no desire to use this sheet of paper. I was not meant to be in that major.

    7. The reason why I chose EMU was for two defunct reasons. I thought I was going to be with my BF forever at the time. Yea right, that ended shortly after I moved on campus. Then I thought that computers was the way to go. Too bad I am horrible at programming, graphic design, etc.

Starting from my early days using message boards and social networks I guess I have been a bit of a rebel. My first experience came from Red Wings World. It is a pay fan site, in support of the Detroit Red Wings, and when their was moderation and the site worked well. I was constantly getting into trouble for posting links to stories. Now I post some stories but I always give the link. I wrote for my high school newspaper so I have always given credit where credit is due.

Well I would get into trouble for sharing too many stories and posting the entire story with out the link. Even though I gave them the credit and I was NOT claiming any of it as my own. That was my early days, now I don’t tend to share as many stories on Red Wings World but I tend to use Facebook and have a connection with most of my Red Wings World friends on there.

Since Red Wings World has been going down hill and the fan base has dwindled because of lack of updates, nothing special for your money, and the home page is still showing Hossa as a Penguin from last season. The community has dwindled and it is a shame because in its heyday (2002-2005) the community did a lot for the community and for people that needed help during the Christmas season, had a hockey game fundraiser, and annual parties.

I digress.


This leads me to TODAY. I have been networking to try and find a career. So this brings me to Linked In. I joined groups and then tried adding people that I thought would be of help to me. When I did this they would say they wouldn’t know me. So then I would have to know their email address to add them. I realize that when the basis of Linked In is to connect you with people that you know. Often times it is the people that you don’t know that can find you work and make you the rock star that you want to be. You have to dig around and try and connect with people in order to find work. IF you limited yourself to only people that you know. Then your scope would be small. I am NOT abusing this function because if you are in the same group as me I am sure that you have common interest and could be of some help to me in the future. After all, givers gain, right?

This also leads me to my ban from Facebook. I have been banned 2.5 times. You ask why the half time. It was a mistake because they never gave me any kind of warning and I didn’t know what the deal was. The first and third time they banned me was for linking too many stories. The Third time a friend of mine made a comment that I should create my own news feed because I am like a drudge report. I told her that Social Median already does that.

The third time they banned me for sharing a group in an email to a few friends. They still never tell you the amount that you have and what is considered SPAM. I don’t want to be too much of a news feed but I can see what the problem is. At the same time, on twitter, you can share a thousand stories and there isn’t rules against it.

I am not trying to abuse any rules. I just seem to push the limit to what you can and can’t do in the Social Media Realm. What do you think? Am I a pest or an outlaw?
